Lessons from Akeelah

Lessons from Akeelah, so some of these might be a stretch but i had alot of thoughts coming to me as i watched this movie today in class. I wanted to get them down before I forgot,

This movie is about a little girl from a low class area of California. She is an awesome speller and has been chose to complete in spelling bees. For her it is not just a bee, it is a way to see more of what is around her. She is faced with people doubting her at every corner. She doesn't have support from home, or her community. Her only support is a couple of friends, the principal and her sister.

While she is training for the bee she is with her coach, Dr. Larabee. He has her read from a book and she is wondering why she isn't learning complex words, just reading roman literature.
So lesson 2 from the movie, big words come from little words, and we know tons of little words. I apply this to our actions. Now I'm not suggesting that we all need to be creating this big task to complete, but in a sense, everything we do is combined into a greater result. The things we say, the way we react, and the way we think and talk to other. All of these combined make us who we are. Also as we work together with those in our social group ("little words") we can make some pretty big complex words that might help us win the spelling bee.... ( I know this is a stretch, bare with me)

In this same scene, Akeelah starts to get discouraged about learning, she is scared of what might happen. Mr. Larabee has here read this quote on the wall which I find so fascinating.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond
measure. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually,
who are you not to be? We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. And as
we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same."
- Marianne Williamson

Isn't this amazing?! We have so much power within us. We don't know our limits. We are powerful , there are so many things that we can be. NO SETTLING! I also love the last two sentences. We have a mission... isn't that what we are taught in our church. Ever since the songs we sang in young women's we have a light and we need to share it with others.

Anyways. Hopefully you got something out of that (following my scattered brain). Look forward to this weekends post, there is alot of fun to come!

New Beginnings

Well this is the beginning of a new blog. I figured that because I am starting a new phase in life I should start by writing it all down so that I can keep up with myself and not get lost.
I just started my third year at utah state.

My current major is Family Consum, Human Development and I am also doing a minor in Sociology. I am considering adding a duel major to it, which would be Family Consumer Sciences. If I did this I would have a for sure job when I graduated instead of just going out in to the unknown (okay its all unknown but not as much as it would be).

This year I am living in a house instead of an apartment complex. It is quite different than last year. Our house is very cute and we are now finally completely settled. We had an interesting first week with no internet, no hot water, and leaking windows, and just getting use to being alone. I also have my own bedroom. I love it, I loved having roommates in the past but there is something about having a space all to your self. :) I have noticed that when you live in a house you don't have the same social opportunities that you do if you were in a complex. You don't have people walking by your door every five minutes stopping to say hi. BUT I have some pretty great roommates and we are already having a blast playing and having fun our own way. Things will be great this year.

I will post more pictures of the house and my cute room once I have them.
